Built during the 16th century, Fatehpur Sikri stands as a best preserved testimonial of Mughal architecture in India. Made out of red stones, Fatehpur Sikri is a mix of Persian and Indian architecture. This is evident from the layout of the imperial Palace complex, consisting of several independent pavilions arranged in formal geometry on a piece of level ground, a pattern taken out from Arab and central Asian tent encampments. Fatehpur Sikri is sited on a rocky ridge, 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) in length and 1 km (0.62 mi) wide, and palace city is surrounded by a 6 km (3.7 mi) wall on three side with the fourth being a lake at that time. Its chief architect was Tuhir Das who synthesised various regional schools of architectural craftsmanship such as Gujarat and Bengal in the building. The Influence of Hindu and Jain architecture are seen along with the Islamic elements in Fatehpur Sikri. The building material used in all the buildings at the site is the locally quarried red sandstone, known as 'Sikri sandstone'. Sikri can be accessed through gates along the five-mile long fort wall, namely, Delhi Gate, the Lal Gate, the Agra Gate, Birbal's Gate, Chandanpal Gate, The Gwalior Gate, the Tehra Gate, the Chor Gate and the Ajmere Gate. The other attractions of this historic site are the Dargah of Salim Chisti, Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal, Birbal € s house, Diwan-e-khas and diwan-e-aam among others.
