I do have some experience with SUNY at Stony Brook. My sister is an alumna of Stony Brook, and I remember attending more than a few social functions at the College with her. Since that time, I have had the desire to attend Stony Brook. I considered applying after graduating from Suffolk County Community College; however, Saint Joseph € s College offered me an academic achievement scholarship which convinced me to enroll there. Hence, acceptance into the MAT program will enable me to fulfill the long held personal goal of attending SUNY at Stony Brook. To supplement my academic accomplishments, I have had employment in the past which required responsibility, empathy, and the ability to communicate. For instance, I worked part-time as a Debt Collection Representative for Citibank. In addition to utilizing various computer programs, I used negotiation techniques and communication skills to collect credit card debts by reaching a financial arrangement that was acceptable to both the customer and the bank. I also worked part-time for Suffolk County Community College as a test tutor for disabled individuals. It was my responsibility to assist disabled students who were not able to read the entrance exams required for class placement. This enabled the College to evaluate the disabled individual € s ability to enroll in various courses. The job as a test tutor, in particular, left me with a feeling of satisfaction because I helped students accomplish academic success even though they may have had certain limitations to overcome. These employment experiences and qualifications contribute to my ability to work with people; therefore, they will ultimately add to my overall teaching talent. Acceptance into the Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies program will allow me to achieve my professional and personal goal of teaching social studies on the secondary level.
